I study the physical processes involved in faulting, earthquakes and associated crustal deformation. These interests encompass the structure of faults and fault zones, the evolution of complex fault systems, triggering of earthquakes, and the geologic record of past earthquakes. My current work with students focuses on neotectonics of the Pacific Northwest, including Neogene faulting, deformation within the volcanic arc, and the rise of the North Cascades. We balance field study with analytical and computer modeling to evaluate the factors that influence the tectonic landforms and deformation we observe. The courses I teach cover topics from the deformation of rocks and the physics behind Earth processes to monitoring of geologic hazards.
