The SEARUN program is dedicated to involving undergraduates as equal partners in coral biology research.  The SEARUN team tested the hypothesis that the disruption of the relationship between zooxanthellae (symbiotic algae) and the host (anemone or coral) is due to environmental damage to the algae.  It is thought the damage to the dinoflagellate occurs when the symbiotic association is exposed to high temperatures and increased ultraviolet radiation associated with global warming and stratospheric ozone depletion, respectively.  The research forms the basis for exciting and novel undergraduate projects in basic science and science education.
