Preparation and Presentation of Slides
What you will need:
Camera (35mm camera with 50mm lens; close-up macro lens may be necessary for small works); light meter, gray card, lighting, backdrop, film. A tripod is recommended for better control when framing and composing, and will reduce camera movement. A cable-release is a useful aid.
Film types: Tungsten or daylight balanced emulsions. Most films, Kodak, Fuji, Agfa, Konica, are available for both tungsten or daylight use.
Light source: It is important to know and ascertain what kind of light source will be used when photographing any color subject. One can begin with two basic determinations, natural/daylight, or artificial light sources specially designed for photographic purposes. It is important to purchase the correct type of color film, balanced for the kind of light you are using.
Photographing your artwork indoors, using Tungsten
light is recommended for better control and color balance. You will need
two lights placed at 45 degree angle from the center of the art work, and
at an equal distance from the wall and/or art work. The lights should be
placed to overlap slightly, but most importantly, illuminate the surface
evenly. Ektachrome (EPY-64); Ektachrome (EPT-160); Fujichrome (RTP).
If
you elect to use daylight balance or outdoor film to illuminate your subject
several factors should be considered: time of day, height of sun, direct
sun, hazy sun, color reflected from other sources, Avoid direct sun falling
on your work; diffuse light or open shade is better, taken between 10:00
a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Kodak E-200; Fuji Sensia or Provia, are recommended films.
Background: a plain, uncluttered background is recommended to avoid elements distracting from the artwork. A non-reflective, gray or black fabric, pinned to a wall provides a neutral background.
Slide Labels: Each slide should be labeled with your name and a number that corresponds to a descriptive page which includes the following information about each artwork: title, medium, dimensions and date. Each slide should have a dot affixed to the lower left corner.
