Our club is involved with a wide variety of community service projects during the Academic Year (Fall-Spring) and during the Summer. Our projects range from annual and seasonal projects to weekly projects. The great thing about our club is that members are always encouraged to suggest new community service projects for us to get involved with. We hope that you find a few projects that you find really fun, interesting, and satisfying.
Thank you for your interest!
The following are some of the projects that our club is involved with...
Projects with Kids
Western Washington University - Extended Education Program: Sleepover with Science & Art
-This is a program for grade-school and middle-school kids that is offered here at WWU. The kids attend an overnight camp at the Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education (SMATE) Building on campus. Science Graduate Students offer workshops for the kids. These workshops usually center around a science theme, some of the themes they have used in the past are: Crime Scene Investigation, Volcanoes, and "It's in the Water". Our club's job is to supervise and assist the kids during the workshops. After the workshops are done we supervise the kids throughout the night and prepare breakfast for them the next morning. If you are good at and enjoy working with kids then this is the project for you.
Whatcom Museum of History & Art: Whatcom Museum Family Activities Day
-This is an event for kids that is put on by the Whatcom Museum of History & Art. The kids are given the opportunity to take part in a variety of arts and crafts projects. These projects are usually centered around a specific holiday, some of the holiday themes that they have featured in the past are: Halloween, Christmas, and Valentines Day. Our club's job is to sit at the arts and crafts tables, show demonstrations to the kids, make sure the kids have the right supplies, and answer any questions that they have. Sometimes a few of us will help out with face-painting, which is always a lot of fun.
Big Brothers & Big Sisters: Bowl for Kids' Sake
-This is a bowling tournament fundraiser put on by the Big Brothers & Big Sisters Organization. Big Brothers & Big Sisters is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing support, friendship and fun to children throughout Whatcom and Skagit Counties. We help these children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships. We help out at the fundraiser by running the raffle table, transporting pizza, and counting the money raised. Sometimes a few of our members will form a bowling team and donate the pledge money that we raise to Big Brothers & Big Sisters.
Blue Skies for Children
-Blue Skies for Children was founded in 1997 by a task force with the help of other local organizations. The organization's goal is to restore hope and self esteem to homeless, low income and foster children in Whatcom County, providing clothing, support and other valuable enrichment opportunities. In the past our club assisted them by making posters for their upcoming auction fundraiser.
Projects for the Needy/Homeless
Coffee and Sandwiches on Tuesdays & Thursdays (CASTT)
-This is project that is organized by Faith Lutheran Church, they also provide all of the food and supplies for the project. Our club makes sandwiches, prepares hot water, and gathers other food, toiletries, and other necessities for the first half of the project. During the second part of the project our club drives to downtown Bellingham and hands out everything to those who need it. We help out with this project about once or twice per month. If you enjoy helping the less fortunate then this is the project for you.
Bellingham Food Bank: Food Drives
-Our club does various projects for the Bellingham Food Bank throughout the school year. Usually we will deliver flyers to a neighborhood telling people about the food-drive a few days prior. A few days later we will go out and pick up the food donations that people have left on their doorsteps. We usually collect a ton of food!
Lydia Place
-Lydia Place is an organization dedicated to improving the lives of women and their children. This organization focuses on helping impoverished women and their children. Many of these women have been the victims of domestic violence. Lydia Place offers shelter, food, and programs for these women and their children. Our club has helped out with fundraising events that benefit Lydia Place. These fundraising events include the annual Lydia Place Auction and the annual Lydia Place Garage Sale.
Old Town Christian Ministries
-Old Town Christian Ministries is a non-profit thrift store located off of Meridian St. They sell items that have been donated to them by businesses and individuals. All profit earned by the thrift store goes towards putting the homeless into temporary housing. We have helped them in the past by sorting donated items and organizing furniture to sell to the public.
Habitat for Humanity
-Many of you have probably heard of Habitat for Humanity. This organization builds homes for families and offers them a no-interest loan to pay back later. Our club has helped with their on-site building projects before. Since none of us have much construction experience we usually work alongside people who instruct us what to do. We have also helped out with their annual Raise the Roof Auction by preparing the tables and auction prizes prior to the event.
Projects for the Elderly & Disabled
Whatcom Volunteer Center: Volunteer Chore
-The Whatcom Volunteer Center is an organization that focuses on linking people in the Whatcom community with service needs in the Whatcom Community. They have a special program called Volunteer Chore. The Volunteer Chore Program provides requests from the elderly and disabled of Whatcom County. Some of these requests include: Yardwork, Housecleaning, and Shopping Assistance. In the past, our club has sent a group of volunteers to do large Housecleaning and Yardwork projects for these people.
Bellingham's Jingle Bell Run
-This a Bellingham race that is put on every year. The registration fees that are paid by participants go towards efforts to prevent, control, and cure Arthritis. In the past we have helped serve snacks and drinks to the participants after the race.
Projects for the Environment
Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association
-This organization works to restore Salmon habitat throughout the Whatcom area. They organize work parties to plant shrubs and remove barriers to the streams that the salmon travel through. They offer quite a few work parties throughout the year but only during the fall and spring. This is a great outdoor project that we take part in throughout the school year.
Learning Environmental Action Discovery (LEAD)
-This organization is operated through Western Washington University and organizes community-based environmental restoration projects. The projects range from removing invasive plant species to planting shrubs near a creek. These projects are usually offered on Saturday mornings. This is an excellent outdoor project to get involved with.
Kulshan Kiwanis Adopted Park: Weeding Project
-Our sponsoring Kiwanis Club, the Kulshan Kiwanis Club, has adopted a park in Bellingham. They are responsible for taking care of the park by doing the necessary cleaning and weeding there. Our club has assisted their club with major group weeding projects at the park. The weeds keep growing back in force and so we will be helping with weeding projects throughout the year.
