L 103: Introduction to the Study of Language
This is the very first course on linguistics. There are usually two parts to the course: the first half is decidated to a survey of sub-fields in linguistics (e.g., phonetics), and the second half deals with sociolinguistic issues (e.g., dialects) based on the first half of the course. This class meets three times a week (twice for lecture and once for discussion; the course was organized differently in the past: two 75 minute sessions a week, discussion interwoven in lecture).
