Shearlean Duke joined the faculty at Western Washington University teaching journalism and public relations after 20 years as a practicing journalist and public relations specialist. She is a former editor and reporter for the Los Angeles Times.

She also taught journalism at East Carolina University and the University of California, Irvine.Duke holds a bachelor's degree from Tennessee Tech University and a master's degree from Chapman University.
