Scholarships and Work Study

Opportunities for financial aid and on-campus work include work-study, tuition fellowships, and student loans. For further information, those interested may explore the Office of Student Financial Resources at Western, 360/650-3470.

Funding for Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Work

We are pleased to have some funds available for our graduate students to travel to conferences to present their scholarly/creative work. Renewable graduate research grants of up to $1000 are also available for research relating to the Master's degree thesis. Both graduate travel and research funds are available on a competitive basis.

Publishing and Editing Experience for Graduate Students

Our graduate students are also able to gain significant editing and publishing experience through work on the editorial staff of one or more of the journals supported by the English Department at Western. The Bellingham Review is a nationally recognized journal that has recently published creative writing by such authors as Charles Wright and Gary Soto, among others. Jeopardy is a creative writing magazine entirely student funded, edited, and produced.

Technical Writing Internship Opportunities

Our program also provides some opportunity for graduate students to develop technical writing skills. We have established two quarterly internship programs with local technical writing companies. In the past, graduate students completing the internships have enjoyed a 100% placement rate in full-time positions as technical writers.
