Marchantia
polymorpha
a thallose liverwort, male gametophytes
This
photo shows a male gametophyte thallus that bears gemmae cups and male
gametophores. The former function to spread this individual
genotype via asexual reproduction: note that some cups
contain
small buds, the gemmae. These splash out of the cups and will
grow into a new thallus. The male gametophore holds sperm
that
collect on the upper surface. When a raindrop hits this
surface
it is directed sidewards, hopefully to find a waiting female
gametophore (see here).

gametophytes here.
