Marchantia
polymorpha
a thallose liverwort, female gametophytes
This
photo shows a female gametophyte thallus that bears female
gametophores. The arms of these palm-tree like structures
bear
the female, egg-holding structures. When sperm splashes over
from
a nearby male plant (see here),
the sperm will fertilize the egg and
the resulting zygote will grow into the sporophyte generation.
This is a short-stemmed sporangium that hangs down under the
female gametophores and releases spores. The spores will grow
into new gametophytes. The whole population of male and
female
gametophytes here.
