Sphagnum
squarrosum
Rough Peat Moss, with sporophytes
There
are many Sphagnum species occurring in the bogs and other shallow wet
spots throughout the world. This species is one of the easier
to
recognize with its light green coloration and leaf tips turned at right
angles to the side branches. Here it is seen bearing
sporophytes.
The lids of the sporangia are forcefully blown off (with
quiet,
but audible pops) on hot summer afternoons, and the spores within are
shed.
