Blechnum spicant

Blechnum spicant  Deer Fern

One of the common evergreen ferns on the forest floor in the coniferous (and other) forests of the Pacific Northwest.  This fern has two kinds of fronds:  in this photograph, the taller ones, with narrower pinnae, are the fertile fronds that produce spores in sporangia.  The slightly shorter fronds, with broader pinnae, are vegetative, for photosynthesis only.
