World Fairs and Other Spectacles
Prerequisites: History 428 or equivalent or permission of the department.
An examination into the commercial, political and cultural dimensions of mass-attended spectacles in the modern world with special focus on the relations between developed and underdeveloped peoples, both indigenous and foreign. The seminar is built around readings of slected books and articles and writing a research paper on a topic worked out with the instructor. The paper topic may be chosen in Third World, European or American fields.
