Required Concert Attendance
* Concert Reviews: You must attend two classical,
"art music" concerts (no jazz or pop music) and write a separate, short
review of each. You are required to review the first and last
piece on the program as well as 1 other work. Using the Review Forms
(found on the web) submit your reviews
along with the concert program.
Your reviews should reflect mastery of terminology and concepts currently
being explored in class. The more terms you can use correctly, and
the greater your expressed level of detail a nd understanding,, the better.
Each concert requires a separate review form. Please turn in Concert
Review Forms after class. Alternatively, slip them under my door.
**Good examples of concert reviews may be found in the
Music library on Reserve for this class. If you have any question
as to what constitutes good reviews, please refer to these.
* The College of Fine and Performing Arts requires that you usher at one concert this quarter, for this you'll receive 3% "extra" credit towards the class grade. A sign-up sheet with instructions will be posted beside the door to enter the PAC box office.
*A list of concerts this Quarter which meet appropriate criteria will be posted on this web site (there are a lot of exciting concerts being presented this Quarter!). Please note that any concert changes and updates will be posted on the web site on a continuous basis.
Tests
*Dates subject to change with fair notice- computer graded- bring a #2 pencil!
*There will be four quizes (no final exam). These will cover vocabulary and concepts discussed in class and in your reading. They will also test application of the above to various musical examples pooled from your required listening. These will be approximately one- third listening comprehension/recognition and two-thirds factual information (i.e., terms, composer info., etc.) Scores from the top three quizes will be used. Lowest quiz score will be dropped. If you miss one quiz, that score will be dropped.
*Final Quiz Time: Last Scheduled Class ( No exam during finals week)
Note: I consider our class time to be primarily, an opportunity to gain aesthetic appreciation of the music through group listening and discussion and through the presentation of contextual material supplemental to that which appears in the required text. Since the tests will cover both in-class and in-text material, you need to both read the text and take notes in class, as well as- most importantly- participate in class discussion of the assigned listening.
PLEASE NOTE*** Under no circumstances will a 2nd missed quiz be made up at a later time. You may miss one quiz and one quiz only. If you miss Quiz 2 and then sleep in, or get sick or, __?__ for Quiz 4, you will get a zero for both quizzes.
