Student evaluations are intended to provide students with feedback regarding how well they performed, as well as provide potential employers and graduate schools with a ranking of student performance, relative to standards that are generalizable among institutions and across regional and even national boundaries.  This standard is generally understood to mean the following:

A = outstanding / significantly exceeded basic criteria
B = above average / exceeded basic criteria in some way
C = average / met basic criteria

Students in my classes will be held to these standards.  My intent in pointing this out is not to be harsh or mean-spirited but to be reasonable and supportive.  I desire future distinction and success for each of my students.  However, if I hold students to a low standard and lead them to believe that a mediocre performance is very good, or that a very good performance is excellent, then when they leave the university they will not be prepared for the standards by which many professionals and/or graduate students are evaluated.  If students want to truly distinguish themselves from their peers and colleagues as they advance through life, they must earn that distinction.  In general, one’s goals will be achieved in proportion to one’s ability to rise above the crowd and distinguish oneself for outstanding quality of performance in whatever circumstances arise.  This is the standard I encourage students to strive toward, and it is the standard that my evaluations reflect.

Finally, throughout all of my classes, evaluation percentages translate into letter grades according to the following formula:

A =-- 94-100
A - = 90-93
B + = 87-89
B = 84-86
B - = 80-83
C + = 77-79
C = 74-76
C - = 70-73
D + = 67-69
D = 64-66
D - = 60-63
F = less-than-60
