WEEK 1:
 
 
(01) Sept 22 Course overview and introductions.  Presentation assignment demonstration. Critical analysis and discussion: video game violence.
Homework: Read on-line syllabus, schedule, and all assignment descriptions. Subscribe to comm350 listserve (click on preceding link for instructions).  Purchase texts (order additional texts immediately if the bookstore does not have enough). Read chapters 1 through 7 in The Non-Designers Design Book and complete all exercises (submit photocopies of exercises to instructor next class; tip: instead of tracing paper, photo-copy and enlarge design elements to re-arrange).


WEEK 2:
 
 
(02) Sept 27 Introduction to visual design. 
Critical analysis and discussion: time-saving technologies?

Homework: Read presentation assignment criteria carefully and select a topic for your presentation.  Email the class listserve to announce and "stake out" your topic (in order to minimize duplication of topics).  Read chapters 8 through 11 in The Non-Designers Design Book and complete all exercises (submit photocopies of exercises to instructor next class).
 
(03) Sept 29

Introduction to typography.  PowerPoint tips and techniques.  Student Technology Center site visit (HH 121, 4:30).
Homework: Research presentation topic and draft presentation notes and slides.  Recommended readings: pages 1-50 in The Non-Designer's Type Book.



WEEK 3:
 
 
(04) Oct 4

Introduction to Photoshop (80 minute guest presentation).  Working with images.  Scanner demonstration.
Homework: Finalize and rehearse presentation. Recommended readings: pages 51-100 in The Non-Designer's Type Book.
 

(05) Oct 6 Presentations.
Homework: Read publishing assignment criteria and select a topic. Email listserve to stake out your topic.  Recommended readings: pages 101-144 in The Non-Designer's Type Book.


WEEK 4:
 
 
(06) Oct 11 Presentations continued.
Introduction to publishing assignment and InDesign.
Homework: Read InDesign Classroom in a Book pages 1-36, complete CD-Rom Tour and Lesson 1.  Research publishing assignment topic.
 
(07) Oct 13 InDesign instruction; critique of other pamphlets. 
Homework: Complete InDesign Classroom in a Book Lessons 2 and 3. Begin drafting text for pamphlet (use MS Word to draft text, without any text formatting; text will be "placed" into InDesign file when you have a draft, and formatted at that point).


WEEK 5:
 
 
(08) Oct 18  InDesign instruction. 
Homework: Complete InDesign Classroom in a Book Lessons 4 and 5.  Re-read pages 105-108 in The Non-Designers Design Book (the Brochures section).  Continue working on pamphlet.  Recommended readings: pages 1-46 in
The Non-Designer's Scan and Print Book.
 
      Oct 20  No Class (Instructor is commemorating a Baha'i Holy Day)


WEEK 6:
 
 
(09) Oct 25 InDesign instruction. 
Homework: Complete InDesign Classroom in a Book Lessons 6 and 7.  Continue working on pamphlet.


 
(10) Oct 27 One-on-one InDesign assistance.
Homework: Complete InDesign Classroom in a Book Lesson 13, as well as other lessons as needed.  Continue working on pamphlet. Recommended readings: pages 47-80 in The Non-Designer's Scan and Print Book.


WEEK 7:
 
 
(11) Nov 1 One-on-one InDesign assistance.
Homework: Finalize pamphlet.
 
(12) Nov 3 Publishing assignment due (bring copies for all students, as well as three copies for instructor).
Introduction to service assignment.  Formation of teams and initial planning. 
Homework: Begin research for service assignment. Recommended readings: pages 81-116 in The Non-Designer's Scan and Print Book.


WEEK 8:
 
 
(13) Nov 8 Tips and Techniques presentation.  In-class team work.  Instructor support.
Homework: Continue service assignment research and begin work on presentation and supporting materials.  Recommended readings: pages 150-164 in The Non-Designer's Scan and Print Book.
(14) Nov 10 Tips and Techniques presentation.  In-class team work.  Instructor support.
Homework: Work on service assignment presentation and supporting materials. Recommended readings: pages 165-190 in The Non-Designer's Scan and Print Book.


WEEK 9:
 
 
(15) Nov 15 Tips and Techniques presentation.  In-class team work.  Instructor support.
Homework: Work on service assignment presentation and supporting materials.

Note: Late assignments will lose 10% of their evaluation per day late, with the possibility for a waiver only under exceptional circumstances.  Exceptional circumstances means a personal emergency or some similar problem.  Any appeals for an exception will be looked upon more favorably if I was notified in advance rather than after the fact (whenever possible).
