KhSA Western Washington University
| The Khmer Student Association is a culturally student-led, non-profit organization. This grassroots organization was re-established in the Fall of 1999. The title "Khmer" is synonymous to the word "Cambodian", which pertains to the people of the present day Kingdom of Cambodia. The reason why we chose the title "Khmer" is because it dates back to our heritage, the once glorious Angkorian Era of the Khmer Empire which had encompassed most of South East Asia. Our Khmer ancestors had built the biggest religious monument in the world called "The Temple of Angkor" and had cultivated most of South East Asia with its rechness in art, culture, agriculture and way of life. The word empowers us to believe, to believe that our Khmer culture is still here, even if years of war, corruption, ignorant leaders, lack of role models and education is still barring us. As long as we are together, unified and educated, we can create opportunities and make a difference.
The main purpose of this club is to create an awareness of Khmer presence and culture in Western's community and the state of Washington. Whe have many activities that can enrich your understanding of the Khmer culture such as:
- Annual Khmer Statewide Conference held here at Western
- New Year Celebration in April held in Tacoma
- Khmer language and cultural dance competition
- High school outreach and recruitment
- Official meetings every other week
- Socials that foster teamwork, leadership and retention like high and low ropes courses, fund-raising events, proposal and grant writing, tutoring, resume building, dances, camping, potlucks, bowling and many more...
These are just some of the events we had accomplished thoughout the years since our re-establishment. Keep in mind though that we are students and professionals at the same time, we know as student that our education is our number one priority and that is the nucleus of our presence, as professionals we must understand the system and educate other people about the process by balancing our school and service. This organization creates and promotes professionalism, higher learning, life-long networks, and opportunities to enhance your Western experience. We are always looking to meet new perspectives and if you have or want to gain more experience in community service, grant writing, grass-roots organizations or simply have a study-break, then put us on your to-do list. We are very open to your suggestions and comments and please don't hesitate to ask us any questions.
