In a paper between 1000 and 1250 words write an essay that addresses the following:

1. Using the works of Helen Roundtree and Louis Montrose, engage the myth of Pocahontas as described by the Disney film or by the series of images provided by your professor (Bond Hall Reference Room).  How does the film/images support or challenge the gendered myths of colonization described by Montrose?  How do those myths (mis)represent Powhatan women?

Second Paper Assignment:

In an essay between 1000-1250 words, write a critical review of Clare Lyons' book, Sex Among the Rabble.  Your review should not simply summarize the book but rather should critically engage its main arguments and how the author constructs those arguments.  Begin by identifying her primary thesis and how she makes her argument.  Think about the kinds of evidence she uses and the examples she gives.  Do they convince you of her argument?  Why or why not?  What has she failed to examine?  Is this material critical to her argument?

Third Paper: Answer the following question.  Your answer should be between 1000-1250 words.

1. How does Sedgwick's account of Native American women and their role in society differ from that of Rowlandson's?  Does Sedgwick offer an alternative reading of "race" to Rowlandson's?  How does Sedgwick's discussion of the relationship between her two heroines differ or fail to differ from Rowlandson's discussion of her relationship with Native American women?
