DECLARING A MAJOR

It is to your advantage to declare a major as soon as possible. This will allow you to seek specific advising in the department and to plan out your academic schedule plan. You will also gain access to classes that are restricted to majors only. If you need help deciding on a major, you are invited to meet with Kathy Knutzen (CV 102, 360.650.3055) to ask questions and explore various options.

HOW TO DECLARE A MAJOR

Contact the department to declare a major. Most majors have a set of prerequisites that you must complete prior to official entry into the program. Once you have declared a major, take advantage of the major advising system in your respective department and seek advising on a regular basis from your assigned major advisor. It is also suggested that you complete a plan of study that will guide you through the major.

REGISTRATION ISSUES

PREREQUISITE COURSES: Make sure you have completed the prerequisites for the courses you are registering for. This requires advance planning so there are no surprises at registration.

REGISTRATION:: Register at your assigned registration time to take advantage of your credit status. Check ahead on the space availability by accessing classfinder (https://www.admin.wwu.edu/pls/wwis/wwsktime.SelClass).

Have options ready in case your classes fill.

OVERRIDES FOR COURSES : Overrides are necessary to gain enrollment into certain classes, to enroll in a class after you have obtained special permission from an instructor and to enroll in classes that are already filled. Overrides are typically obtained either directly from the instructor or from the departmental advising staff. Once an override is entered into the system you will be allowed to register for the class. The Biology Department has an online override system in place (click on this link).

GRADUATION

WHEN TO APPLY FOR GRADUATION: The application for the degree is filed two quarters prior to graduation. The process starts with a major evaluation in the department which is completed by your faculty advisor or departmental advising staff. Minor evaluations are also done at the same time by contacting the department. Fill out a degree application form which can be comleted and submitted online (degree evaluation form). For other information and to obtain major evaluation forms go to the WWU Registrar's degree application site.
