- Also from Wired Magazine:
- GEM MAKING
Process: Diamonds are
forever, and now so are you. After your loved ones ship 8 ounces of your
cremation dust to LifeGem, the company filters out the calcium, turns your
carbon into graphite, and puts you in an oven for six months. With lots of
heat and pressure (1.6 million PSI), the carbon atoms realign into a
diamond.
- Results:
Ten 1-carat you-stones.
- Pros:
Near indestructibility. To the four Cs of
diamond-buying, add "character."
- Cons:
You become a
theft target.
- Hurdles: Um, who wants to spoon Grandma
into a US mail-certified container?
- When available:
Now
" Costco's diamonds come with a
guarantee: they will be half the
price of an appraisal anywhere
else, or your money back plus a
hundred dollars and the cost of
the appraisal. Such competitive
pricing shows how much
flexibility in the diamond's
markup."
