STRANGE ATTRACTORS HOME PAGE

Strange Attractors is an independent comic book published bi-monthly by RETROGRAFIX. Like. . . Strange Attractors is part of the independent comics movement, said movement being years-old now, and enjoying explosive growth--even in these dark days of The Distributor Wars.

Strange Attractors tells the tale of Sophie, the curator of The Museum of Lost Things, and her Freud-spouting robot side-kick, Roshi, as they adventure through a future world of SuperScience, Magic, robots, Rangerettes, and retro-futuristic romance and adventure.

The RETROGRAFIX Wall Of Dignity

Strange Attractors has been toasted in Dave Sim's Letters From the President, received numerous Certified Cool and Hot Flash! awards from Capitol Distribution, and has been featured in Diamond's Under The Reading Lamp. Here are a few of our most memorable quotes:

A book that just arrived out of nowhere and genuinely caught my attention . . . A real Spicy Space Stories favourite of mine: Strange Attractors."

--Dave Sim Cerebus 183

". . . each issue is better than the previous one . . . Strange Attractors enchanted and delighted me--no easy feat!"

--Diana Schutz, Editor in Chief Dark Horse Comics

"The first true, non-parody, retro comic for the golden age . . . The creators have infused brand new life into an old genre . . . "

--Richard Relkin Comic Culture

"Strange Attractors is a delectable book full of intrigue and adventure, dusted with self-discovery and romance. The storytelling is classic and charming. The art is lyric with clean lines and smooth curves. It's a good read, one readers owe to themselves to pickup up."

--Cat Kouns Combo

"If you like out of the ordinary comics then you'll love this one."

Ian Feller Comic Book Collector

"Strange Attractors wears its influences--and proclaims its creators' love of comics--on every page. Yet the book is far from a slavish imitation of Love and Rockets or the old Planet Comics space-operas. Sherman and Cohen have created a rich and entertaining setting, one worthy of their eminently likeable characters."

--James Lowder Sci-Fi Universe

"Superior science fiction with outstanding art."

--Brent Richards Styx International Distribution

"one of the few pleasures in life is the unexpected discovery of a great comic you've never heard about before. Such an occurance is the appearance of a unique, self-published comic Strange Attractors . . . there is obviously a great deal of story to be told and I eagerly anticipate each issue."

Sez Who?! , Small Press Showcase

"I of course loved it. It's a kind of--what if Dan Decarlo had drawn Planet comics? The pages invited me to look at them.

--Trina Robbins

What Michael And I Are Up To

Strange Attractors is our postmodern take on adventure and romance comics an attempt to meld genres, to fold, spindle, and warp the semiotics and sensibilites of Silver Age comics to our own idiosyncratic purposes. Strange Attractors pays tribute to the Romance and Adventure Comics of the Fifties and Sixties and reflects the ways our consciousnesses, our sensibilities have been shaped by one too many viewings of Forbidden Planet, by lengthy exposure to the artistry of Jack Kirby and Steranko, and having been dipped in the ambiance of the Sixties, Timothy Leary, Equal Rights Feminism, Norman Spinrad, Robert Heinlein, Camille Paglia, Robert Anton Wilson, Samuel R. Delany, H.P. Lovecraft, Dave Sim, Alan Moore, and the media-scape of the early '90s.

How We Got Started

The RetroGrafix Project began over four years ago as artist Michael Cohen sat watching the sun set over the Mayan ruins of Tikal in Guatemala. Returning home after a grueling 62-hour plus ride in a Mexican bus, he shared his vision with his long-time musical and software-collaborator, writer Mark Sherman. RetroGrafix was born. The result of their shared vision is Strange Attractors, a comic of which it's been said "there's no comic and no universe quite like [it] in today's comic media landscape!"

Michael Cohen is the artist behind Strange Attractors. responsible for the first everComic Buyers Guides. His art has been compared to Chuck Austen and the Hernandez Brothers.

Mark Sherman is the writer behind Strange Attractors. Strange Attractors is his attempt to ". . . connect with the very real world of the imagination, an attempt to have an extremely close encounter with the agents of Novelty, Weirdness, & the Imagination in the Here and Now."
