copyright authenticity branding STATEMENT:
The primary still life image consists of one real pear and one fake pear nested in a plastic bag and framed in specially designed punctuation meant to quote and spoof the collective still life genre. Dysfunctional museum lights focus on the repeated image with the actual scanned plastic pear completing the trilogy. The piece questions both the genre itself and conventions of display.

copyright display still life STATEMENT:
Starting with the title, Masterpiece, the piece is a spoof of the still life genre. The floating frame along with the eye-like quotation marks toy with the distinction between the grocery store and the museum.

Magic Cookie literalizes the technological concept of placing cookie files on a person's computer. The enticing cookie wrapped in a ribbon which bears an address cannot be rejected by its intended target.

privacy data mining tracking STATEMENT:
Like a questionnaire, the piece gathers seemingly disconnected and unimportant information into a personal profile of the viewer. Taken individually the questions are meaningless. Variations of the questions were collected from product warranty cards. Aggregated together the information takes on a completely different value.

tracking tagging commodifying STATEMENT:
The leaf, symbolic of things that are free to pick up and free in their movement, is numbered, addressed, gold plated, and embalmed in a specimen box, a complete violation of what makes a leaf entrancing.

This not so free leaf masquerades as a go-cart, attempting to fly but definitely not without notice. Encased by its metal box, it is protected from being trampled but also completely isolated and otherwise useless.

This leaf outfitted with bicycle training wheels is presented front and back--recto verso--with the two halves bolted together. To add to the indignity, a leash likens it to a household pet.

At the time this piece was done in 1997, Sojourner was exploring Mars. In the press, there was considerable discussion of concerns about biocontamination.
Usually the concerns focused on the problem of bringing back contamination from space. This piece imagines the reverse: that a leaf from Manhattan has somehow hidden itself underneath the probe. The art work is scaled to match Sojourner's actual size.

display whimsey overkill STATEMENT:
A preposterously overweight vehicle with a sidecar enables the transport of a single real leaf. The piece was meant to be displayed on the floor as a obstacle though sometimes ended up parked upright in a corner. The literal 2x4 stud is encased in metal and balances on a large caster and a wheel on the sidecar.

privacy surveillance tracking STATEMENT:
This is a series of four hinged image pairs each meant to symbolize a couple. The gloves define the character of the individuals as well as the power relationship between the two. It was intended to be mix and match, meaning that the hinges could be rearranged. The pairs are propped out from the wall like facing pages of a book. Each glove pair reveals meticulous detail. The white x compositionally confines the gloves to their display box thus distancing them from their partners.
