THE FOLLOWING SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AWARDED BY AUDITION. Contact the Department of Music office (360-650-3130) for more information.

Arthur Hicks Piano Scholarship. This scholarship is offered to outstanding music majors in piano. The amount of the scholarship and number of scholarships awarded are variable from year to year.

Bellingham Music Club Scholarship. The Bellingham Women's Music Club offers one $500 scholarship to undergraduate music majors. Candidates apply by audition.

Choral Scholarship. This scholarship is offered to vocal music majors. The award amount and number of scholarships available is variable from year to year.

Don C. and Ada G. Walter Scholarship. This scholarship honors the memory of Don C. Walter, WWU Assistant Professor and Director of Bands from 1947 until his retirement in 1974. Scholarship number and amount varies from year to year. Eligibility criteria include academic and music merit, service to the music department, potential as a music educator, and financial need.

Dorothy Kirk Westman Scholarship in Music. The number and amount of awards may vary depending on funds available. Awards will be made to students interested in vocal and/or instrumental music with preference given to students, judged by music faculty, to make an enduring contribution to music as a performer, teacher, or arts supporter.

Ford Hill Piano Scholarship. This scholarship was established in honor of Professor Ford Hill. Scholarship awards of variable amount are made to outstanding piano students.

L. Mildred Hurd Scholarship. This scholarship honors Mildred Hurd, who taught music, led school bands and composed music for them in Bellingham for many years. She graduated from Western when it was Bellingham Normal School. The award amount and number of scholarships are variable from year to year.

Music Composition Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to outstanding music majors in composition. The amount and number of scholarships vary from year to year.

Music Department String Scholarship. This scholarship is offered to string music students and is funded by organizations connected to the fine and performing arts, along with private donations. The award amount and number of scholarships is variable from year to year.

Music Department Winds Scholarship. Offered to wind performers, funded by organizations connected to the fine and performing arts, along with private donations. The award amount and number of scholarships is variable from year to year.

Woodwind Endowment. $1000 awarded to an outstanding woodwind student in the Department of Music.

Rhoda C. Keagle Music Scholarship. Scholarship is available to an outstanding upper-division piano or voice student who has financial need. The scholarship was established in the memory of Mrs. Keagle, who was a graduate of Western and taught in the Bellingham schools.

Willard A. and Anne W. Brown Music Scholarship. A scholarship awarded to Western Washington University students majoring in music. Please see department for additional details.

William D. Cole Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship honors William D. Cole, who served as director of bands at Western from 1970 until his death in 1979. The award amount and number of scholarships varies from year to year; music majors may apply.

William Sanford Piano Scholarship. This scholarship is offered to recruit outstanding new piano students at the undergraduate or graduate level. Recipients shall be selected by the coordinator of the piano program.

Gregory Cox Music Scholarship: $1000 scholarship awarded to students studying trombone.

Paulene Dalquist Scholarship: Awarded to music majors studying strings who have demonstrated a talent and passion for their music.

Margaret E. Hamstreet Scholarship: A $1,000 award for an upper division piano student.

Frances Jean Miller Scholarship: $1,000 award for students in the Music Department.

THE FOLLOWING SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AWARDED BY THE BASIS OF RECOMMENDATIONS BY THE DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC FACULTY. Students do not apply for these awards.

Music Merit. This scholarship was a gift from Esther Strong, an alumnae of Western. This $100 scholarship is a biennial award.

Presser Foundation Scholarship. Funded by the Presser Foundation and the Music department, the $3,000 scholarship award is made to an outstanding music major for use in the student's senior year.
