Assignment 6: Building a 3D image of Canyon Lake Creek Watershed and Saving your work

Preliminary work

1. Create a c:\temp folder to save your work to and save your project as well as all other files here.

2. When done try to copy all of your work onto a Zip or floppy disk or your campus account.

3D Analyst Work

3. You may wish to rerun Tutorial 1 as we did in class, check your notes for its location.

4. Consult your notes and use the Help command in ArcView to learn about the following, and then define in own words what these terms mean in ArcView 3D Analyst:

  • 3D Scenes
  • Identify Tool
  • Select Tool
  • Tin legend editor (see below)

5. Build and save your own TIN for Canyon Lake Creek or for the Fraser Lowlands (refer to the notes on the course web page). The data is located in:

Canyon Lake Creek

Saldata wwudata/canyonlake/dem

It is a grid file called clcdem

Fraser Lowlands

Saldata buckley_research/borderlands_new/dem

It is a grid file called crossbdr

To make your life easier, I would recommend copying the above file to the workspace you created on your c:\temp folder.

6. Save your work. You can experiment with changing background colors under 3D scene properties, and display colors by clicking on the current colors in the table of contents which activates the Tin Legend editor, and then selecting the legend button on the Faces section of this template.

7. Attempt to build a Layout as we did in class (check your notes) if it doesn't work then at least print your work using the "screen-dump" Print command under the File menu in 3d analyst.

Shaded Relief work

8. Next, import the same GRID file into a VIEW. Using SURFACE from the menu, Compute_hillshade and create a shaded relief map of your selected area (See Steve Walker's notes on the course web page).

9. Make a final LAYOUT of the shaded relief map.
