Assignment 2: Thematic Mapping

  1. Review the various thematic mapping web sites available through the list on the course web page. Search for additional web pages.
  2. After you have familiarized yourself with the data and tools available at a given web site, set an objective; that is determine something you would like to investigate and learn more about based on the tools and data available. (For example your objective might be to see if SAT test scores are associated with high crime areas and poverty).
  3. Using the tools and data build and printout two or more maps using the Thematic Mapper and skills you learned when working with Electronic Atlases.
  4. Discuss and critique your results. Did you learn anything new? Can you think of ways of improving your investigation in the future? Do your results raise additional questions that you would like to investigate?…

Special Note: As in any course meeting the requirements as stated above would result in a grade of in the B range exceeding them would result in a higher grade.

Write up:

1. DEFINE: In your own words define the following two terms: Electronic Atlas and Thematic Mapper

2. REVIEW: Provide a short review of one or more Thematic Mapper web page (be sure to go beyond the Thematic Mapper we used in class) by answering questions such as where is it (url), what is the web site's focus, what is available on the web site,  what kind of tools are available for accessing and displaying the data, how might this web site be improved...

3. GOAL: Write one short paragraph describing the objective or purpose of your study.

4. MAP OUTPUTS: Make two or more maps using displays from a thematic mapper.  Make a final map product(s) in PowerPoint as you did in Assignment 1 and
also save a copy of the jpeg(s) of your map(s) using the following file name:  Egeo250-you last name- first initial-Asgn-2 to  J:\saldata\SAL_temp\Egeo250\Assignment 2\

5.
DISCUSSION: Provide a final paragraph of discussion and critique of your work.  That of course would include three things: a discussion of your results including a spatial discussion (what can we discover in your map),  your satisfaction or dissatisfaction with these results (how well does it meet your goal), and how things could be improved.

6.
Put your name on the back of the last sheet facing outwards.

Good luck. Expect two or more black and white print-outs plus definitions and a short goal and discussion...
