Assignment 3: GIS Map Building with Existing Data

1.  Create a subfolder to save your work to and be sure to give this subfolder a unique but meaningful name.

 2. Review your notes from class, click on the PowerPoint slides (probably only accessible from on campus), by checking the "SOME-DEFINITIONS.htm" on the course home page, and also by using the Help Command in ArcView And the Index tools available through Help to review the Following (Note that the online Help Command is not my favorite way to learn things, but this might be all you have, so please look at this even if its quality is low):

Project Window

View Window

Theme (Class)

Table of Contents

Zooming in and out on a view

Legends

Palette Manager

Layout Window

3. Using the GIS Textbook on the Web by clicking here (probably only available from campus) read pages 4 through 10 about the definition of GIS.

4. Define in own words what these terms mean in ArcView:

5. Based on the work we illustrated in class, create the following maps with the existing data we used in class found in the

J:\saldata\Egeo250\Data GIS assignment\

In a two map sequence, one for each city, compare the relationship of roads to streams and habitat in Ferndale and Lynden. That is make a seperate map for each place (zoom in) that contains: city, roads, streams, and habitat.

Special Note: As you are working with your map there are several ways to move back and forth between your View (raw display of data) and Layout (finished product map). The easiest is to open the Window menu and scroll down and click Tile. This will enable you to see all the parts of your project and choose any one of them by moving the cursor to that window and clicking.

Also, periodically save you work to a Project file in the subfolder that you created.

6.  Make a jpeg of your layout (in the Layout window from the menus use File/Export)  and save it to your own account and to the following folder  using the following file name:  Egeo250-you last name- first initial-Asgn-3 to  J:\saldata\SAL_temp\Egeo250\Assignment 3\

Write-up

  1. Definitions: Provide definitions in your own words for the following 5 terms:View Window, Table of Contents, Legend Editor, Palette Manager, and Layout Window.
  2. Final Maps: Provide two final maps by using the View / Layout command from the menu. Make sure you include all the minimum requirements in making your maps (refer to the web page instructions if necessary).  Also, save a copy of the layouts as jpeg(s) of your map(s) using the following file name:  Egeo250-you last name- first initial-Asgn-3 to  J:\saldata\SAL_temp\Egeo250\Assignment 3\
  3. Results: Discuss what you learned for each city. Is there any apparent difference in the relationship of roads to streams and habitat in these two places.
  4. Critique: In a short paragraph, critique your final map. Might you want to improve things or add more?
