Final Project
Choose a project to demonstrate your interests and skills
Build a little project that demonstrates the skills you learned in this class and provides a useful output that can be included in your portfolio. Please discuss your ideas with the TAs or instructor to obtain assistance and pointers on what is expected and how to make your work more pleasurable and engaging to yourself and your audience. Note, as a 1 credit class, this project should not be too daunting. There is much data readily available for you to use in demonstrating your skills. The only rule of thumb is that if you only use electronic atlas and/or thematic mapping skills, this wouldn't be sufficient demonstration of skills learned.
Write-up
After completing your project you will make a PowerPoint for sharing in class and hardcopy report for handing in and using in your portfolio. Each should include the following, however the powerpoint should be more of an outline of points while your hardcopy should be full sentences. Write-up to include the following in order:
1. Objective -- what is the purpose/goal of the project?
2. Data -- what data have you assembled and where did you obtain it from?
3. Steps -- in very broad terms describe the steps that you performed in building your project.
4. Outputs -- a least two maps.
5. Analysis -- a short description discussing the outputs of the project and how they relate to the objectives. What did you learn from your project?
6. Critique -- What problems did you face? What might you improve on? How might you do things differently in the future? What would you suggest as the next step in this project, or simply where do we go from here?
Work due at time scheduled for final exam. Come prepared to display and discuss your final project. Have the powerpoint on your u drive or a disk or cd so that we can rapidly download it onto the j: drive for display to the entire class on the computer projector.
Presentation
Time: Final exam time for class -- check current timetable.
What you should bring:
1. PowerPoint of your project to share with the rest of the class illustrating the points noted above and especially your final maps. Time is limited, so think you will have no more than 5 minutes maximum to make your presentation including time to bring-up your powerpoint and answer a question or two. At the beginning of class everyone will be asked to download a copy of their presentation onto a folder on the j: drive so presentation to the class is simplified and so that the instructor will have a copy to review later.
2. Hardcopy of your project addressing all the points indicated above in full sentences. You may wish to save this for your portfolio for later in your career as an example of work you can accomplish.
