Notes for using the National Atlas Thematic Mapper
1)Go to:
http://www.nationalatlas.gov/natlas/natlasstart.asp in Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator click-on MAKE MAPS.
2)The website will be displayed in three different windows.
- The left window is the map window.
- The top right window is the layers or variables that can be mapped.
- The bottom right window is the instructions for using the site.
3)Please read the instructions.
4)Select the following variables to be mapped:
- counties, significant earthquakes, an ethnic population, and railroads.
5)Choose redraw on the map menu in the left window. This will redraw the map with the selected variables.
6)With the Zoom In map menu box active ( the button before "Zoom In" is turned on), choose 16x and click Washington state. This will recenter the map on Washington and zoom in 16x.
7)Choose print from the map menu, and name your map.
8)Select print from the File menu in Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.
9)Explore the atlas by choosing different variables and other locations. Have fun.
10) Explore using the Right mouse button. Note that if the cursor is over the map it is possible to export your map in a GIF format (use save picture as). You can also down load your legend. Based on last weeks work you should be able to get this into ArcView and make a nice little map.
11) Also, explore the Map Layers Download button that appears in the upper right hand corner. Note you can both download information and get additional instructions about using this National Atlas thematic mapper by clicking this button.
