Welcome!     Each year storytellers from all corners of the country come together to celebrate the art of storytelling. They come to share, learn, and teach about the many facetted aspects of storytelling in our society, culture, and everyday life.  The theme for the National Storytelling Conference 2004, Embracing the Power of Storytelling, asks us to look at the art of storytelling and challenges us to go beyond the limits we set for ourselves and our culture’s perception of storytelling’s value. As a community we will ask:

  • How do we embrace the richness and power of the diversity that gathers together at this conference?

  • How do we step out into the larger world with the strength and courage to promote changes that transform our communities in a lasting way?

  • How do we use the power of storytelling to enrich our lives and the lives of others at home, work, and play?

The offerings this year, whether in formal workshops or in the spontaneous gatherings of tellers will nurture, inspire, educate, and empower you in your future endeavors.

  • Pre-conference sessions organized by special interest groups that offer in-depth involvement in specific focuses of storytelling.

  • Special first year for an Environmental Theme pre-conference and conference sessions expanding the experience.

  • Each morning begins with a keynote speaker who will inspire your day.

  • 53 workshop offerings in such areas as education, healing arts, youth telling, telling in businesses and organizations, storytelling as art, and many more.

  • College credit and clock hours will be available through Western Washington University.

  • Thursday night Regional Concert featuring tellers from the West Coast, Hawaii, and British Columbia.

  • Friday night Gallery Walk giving conference attendees an opportunity to visit the community in downtown Bellingham and Historic Fairhaven.

  • Sunday afternoon National Concert featuring nationally and internationally known tellers.

Bellingham will empower you with the majestic and awe inspiring natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest, combined with its vibrant arts and education community. Standing on the shores of any one of numerous beaches along northern Puget Sound, a visitor can simultaneously view snow capped peaks and emerald green forests. The community of Bellingham is rich in art galleries, bookstores, and fine restaurants offering a wide variety of traditional and ethnic foods. The more adventurous visitors will find a wealth of hikes on the network of Greenways trails within the city or find themselves in State and National parks within an hour's drive.

Come visit us for the National Storytelling Conference 2004. Come for inspiration, relaxation, and the sheer enjoyment of being with like-minded people. This can be an opportunity to meet and share with some of the most talented and enjoyable people you could ever get to know. Come to where storytelling is in the very spirit of the land and Embracing the Power of Storytelling can take on a literal meaning.
