WWU Directions and Parking


Driving Directions to WWU campus

  • From Interstate 5, take Exit 252: Samish Way / WWU
  • Follow Western Washington University direction signs to Bill McDonald Parkway (Northbound: turn left onto Samish Way, turning left again over I-5, keep in left lane.
    Southbound:  turn right onto Samish Way, then get in left lane immediately.
  • Turn Left on Bill McDonald Parkway
    (Note: this turn is one block west of the freeway, intersection says Byron Ave.)
  • (Pass Sehome High School on left )
  • Turn right at South College Drive (approx. 2 miles from freeway)
  • Proceed forward to the Visitor Information Center for a campus map and parking information or parking permit.

Scenic Driving Directions from the South
(Highly recommended)

  • From Seattle or south....
  • Drive North on Interstate 5.
  • Take Exit 231 (State Route 11) just North of Mount Vernon & Burlington.
  • Follow the famous Chuckanut Drive along the scenic coast overlooking the San Juan Islands and Chuckanut Bay.
  • Stop at Larrabee State Park if you have time for a stroll to the beach.
  • When entering Fairhaven you will follow the road as it curves across the bridge after the 1st traffic light (road becomes 12th street).
  • Go straight at next light.
  • Turn right on Harris.
  • Turn left on 14th.
  • Turn right on Knox (note the lovely houses!)
  • Turn left on Highland Drive and drive 1 mile to campus.
  • For parking, follow directions below.

Parking on WWU Campus
Parking enforcement is very strict on campus (24 hr. patrol).
A parking pass is required in order to park on campus
Go to the Campus Services office for your permit if not already pre-purchased  (see campus map below).
Make sure you mention that you are with the National Storytelling Conference.

Parking for Conference Attendees:

  • Follow the above directions.
  • Please note the following parking information:
  • **If you purchased a parking pass with your conference registration, you do not need to stop at the Visitor Information Center or Campus Services unless you need a map.
    **Commuters who have pre-purchased permits need to pick them up at the NSN registration check-in at the Viking Union Multipurpose Room.
    **Those registered for campus housing can pick up their pre-purchased permits at housing check-in.
    **Those who have not purchased a permit ahead of time will need to go to the Campus Services office during the day, or pay at the payboxes after hours.
  • Turn left (up hill) on West College Way.
  • Turn right on Highland Drive.
  • Follow road as it curves left down hill on to North Garden Street.
  • Turn right on Pine St. for lot 4R (or) right on Oak St. for lot 3R.
  • Follow signs to Housing Check-in or Conference Registration to pick up your parking permit. 
    Return immediately to your car to display your permit. (Permits required 24 hr. a day).
    Housing Check-in at Higginson Hall is open July 6-8, 4-11pm. 
    All other times, you may go to Edens Hall (#6 on the campus map - see below). 
    Edens Hall will be staffed 24 hours a day.

Parking and venue directions for Tuesday evening events
or Sunday National Storytelling Concert only:

  • If Information Center or Campus Services is closed, go up the hill on West College Way.
  • Turn right on Highland Drive.
  • Park in lot 14G (on right side of street opposite Shalom Center) and pay at blue pay box machines (one dollar per hour).
  • If 14G is full, go across High Street to 11G.
  • For Sunday, July 11, National Storytelling Concert:
    WWU Performing Arts Center is located on High Street, just North of these two parking lots. Look for the large red iron girder sculpture on the plaza opposite Wilson Library.
    Enjoy the view and enter the PAC lobby on your left.

  • For Tuesday, July 6, evening events:
    - Library Presentation Room (Storytelling in Organizations) is located opposite the Performing Arts Center.  Door is outside at ground level on your left as you face the Wilson Library Skybridge. 
    - Frazier Hall 4 (Youth Storytelling Concert) is located across Red Square.  Walk under Wilson Library Skybridge and proceed to North East corner of the square.
    - Viking Union 565 AB (The Healing Voice of Story) is located just North of the Performing Arts Center on High Street to the right of the plaza with the red iron girder sculpture and the university bookstore.

Parking for Wednesday evening Ceilidh

  • Follow WWU directions from freeway (see above).
  • Turn Left on Bill McDonald Parkway
  • (Pass Sehome High School on left )
  • Follow Bill McDonald Parkway as it curves to the right.
  • Park in lot C on left.  (Parking free after 5pm - no permit required)
  • Wade King Recreation Center is located across West College Way.
