Tuesday Activities

We would like to invite you to arrive early to participate in some activities “on your own.”  Special arrangements have been made with local agencies and businesses to offer some unique Bellingham activities for the Tuesday preceding the conference.

Whale Watch Cruise with The Island Mariner
This seven-hour whale watching cruise has been voted the #1 tourist activity in the area.  The cruise departs from the Bellingham Marina at 10AM, and returns at 5PM. The 110 seat Island Caper cruises through the San Juan Islands in search of Orca whales. You may see sea lions, eagles, great blue herons, and other wildlife in addition to the Orcas. An on board naturalist provides lively and entertaining historical, geological, nautical and wildlife information.  Lunch is available for sale on board or you can bring your own.  The conference rate is $55 for adults and $45 for children.  Make your reservations at 1-877-734-8866 and tell them you’re with the NSN conference. It can get cool on the water even on warm days so make sure you bring a windbreaker. Consider bringing a camera, hat, and sunscreen too. www.orcawatch.com

As of June 25, there are still spaces available on the boat.

Guided Interpretive Tours

Bellingham

Walking Tour of Downtown Public Art. In this 1 1/2-2 hour interpretive tour you will have the opportunity to see the world-class public art on display throughout downtown Bellingham. There is a limit of 40 participants for this tour.

History of Salmon and People on Whatcom Creek. .  There is a long relationship between salmon and people at the site where Whatcom Creek empties into Bellingham Bay. This relationship reaches from long before recorded history to the contemporary struggles to provide for both salmon and industry. This 1 ½ -2 hour tour of the salmon hatchery, Environmental Learning Center, and Maritime Heritage Park will provide a fascinating look at this history ending with storytelling at the Salmon Woman totem pole.

Note: The two walking tours above can be taken in succession.

Ferndale (Located 10 minutes north of Bellingham)

Tennant Lake Interpretive Center. Between 3:30 –5 PM Naturalists Jim and Holly will be leading two separate 1 ½ hour tours of the fragrance garden, look-out tower (with spectacular views of Mt. Baker) and the boardwalk out over the wetlands surrounding Tennant Lake.  There is a 30 participant limit.

After the tour you may want to take a 10 minute walk or short drive to...

Hovander Homestead Park Farm.

This historic Homestead is adjacent to Tennant Lake and is now a county park.  You can feed the farm animals, climb the look-out tower, walk through the huge barn, climb on old farm equipment, tour the turn of the century farmhouse, and stroll along the banks of the Nooksack River.
