Readers Theatre in the Classroom

EDUC 320
Course Description:

Adaptation of fiction and nonfiction into script form for K-12 classroom.  Emphasis on teaching creative writing, literature appreciation, teamwork, and oral skills development.

This course will offer students practical instruction in the art of Reader’s Theatre and how it can be used to enliven learning in the K-12 classroom.  The course will teach why Reader's Theatre can be so beneficial to children’s learning (literature appreciation, confidence in oral expression, and teamwork) while allowing for the inclusion of students of varying academic and physical capabilities.  We will discuss appropriate materials for different age levels and students will have a hands-on opportunity to learn how to adapt fiction and nonfiction into script form.  In this process, students are encouraged to explore multicultural literature as they make selections for script writing.

Readers Theatre students will also have opportunities to work in local school classrooms and perform for students in local schools.

*Note: (Previously listed as Library Science 320) This course is currently offered once a year as a daytime course on a TTh schedule.
A background in children's literature is recommended for readers' theatre students, eg. ELED 405 or ENG 441.  These courses are not required for enrollment in EDUC 320. Please contact the instructor if you have questions or concerns regarding prerequisites.
