Going Home- An Evening of Storytelling
Based on experiences in Israel
and Palestine, Naomi Steinberg has
developed a storytelling evening entitled Going Home.
The storytelling seeks to move beyond describing the
conflict or trying to figure out an ‘answer’. Highlighting the stories
of people she met and weaving together personal anecdotes and folktales,
these stories provide the context/frame for the telling of The Wonderful
Healing Leaves - a traditional Jewish fairytale from the 14th century,
collected in Iraqi-Kurdistan.

Ernest Shackleton’s dream of being first to cross the Antarctic
continent on foot became a nightmare when his valiant ship, The
Endurance, was crushed in the pack ice of the Weddell Sea. The story of
how he and the 27 men of his expedition survived on the ice and
eventually came to safety is an epic tale of hardship and suffering, of
courage, determination, and fortitude.

Stories-In-Betwixt & Between Workshop
1-4pm,
Using criteria developed to identify and evaluate
storytelling goals, the process of having one's tellings critiqued with
thoughtful feedback, in a safe environment, as well as critiquing
tellings by fellow workshoppers, will provide participants with valuable
insight through this
workshop structure, which is an adaptation of ideas and experiences
gleaned from three years of writing fiction workshops required for my
writing degree, as well as from my formal training in teaching. (Please
see the
Stories-in-Betwixt & Between Workshop Expectations and
Sign-Up
Calendar, 2008). By the end of the Stories-in-Betwixt & Between
Workshops, each teller will have created and honed an effective
thirty-minute program of oral storytelling.
$195 covers seven three-hour sessions; limit nine.
To register, cheques should be dated and received
a minimum of five days prior to the start of the program. Please make
your cheques payable to Deidre Hill. Full refunds will be made if the
workshop is cancelled by me. The workshops, requiring nine participants,
will be cancelled if there is insufficient enrollment. Prior to sending
payment, please contact
me, so that I can keep track of the number of spaces available.

Fanning the Embers Storytelling Retreat
St Andrews House, on the Hood Canal
Fanning the Embers was originally launched in 2005 with a gathering of
storytellers in a log cabin just outside Olympia. There could not have
been a more fitting place to bring together storytellers of the Pacific
Northwest Region, people gifted with a deep pioneering spirit.
Fanning the Embers allows storytellers from all over the Pacfic
Northwest to mingle and get to know one another in a relaxed, welcoming
setting. It was specifically designed to give tellers an opportunity to
gather outside the festival or workshop atmosphere. The first gathering
was a great success, drawing tellers from Oregon and Washington -- but
it was much, much too short!
In 2006, a full-fledged retreat provided an expanded schedule that gave
everyone time to pursue unhurried conversations, amiable investigations,
and the chance to commiserate on the fun and frustrations of this
storytelling life, fostering spontaneity and creativity. The setting,
St. Andrew's House on the Hood Canal, provided fresh air and fuel,
allowing embers to flame.
Fanning the Embers Storytellers Retreat has proven to be useful,
connective, and relaxing all rolled into one. It provides a time to
explore each other's
story intent and desire in a comfortable, supportive atmosphere.
