This year's Tellabration in Bellingham will celebrate
National Storytelling Week and National Children's Book Week
with a lively performance of tales from many cultures and regions
across the world. The stories chosen for this performance will
come from recent publications of folktales, highlighting the
inspiring link between traditional storytelling in the oral
tradition and the beauty of modern illustrated picture books.

About
Tellabration....
Every year, in
celebration of National Storytelling Week, Woodring College of Education
and the Bellingham Storytellers Guild
sponsors an exciting storytelling event called Tellabration. In
2005 the College of Fine and Performing Arts joined us in sponsoring
this storytelling showcase.
Tellabration is a
world-wide event when folk around the world gather together in large and
small venues to celebrate the art of storytelling and the oral
tradition. Bellingham's Tellabration is often one of the largest
in the nation, drawing crowds ranging from 100-500 depending on the year
and the venue chosen on WWU campus. Our Tellabration is most frequently
held in the Performing Arts Center Concert Hall at WWU. Occasionally we
choose to use the Old Main Theatre or Frasier Hall room #4. Tellabration
concerts also take place in many other locations across the Pacific
Northwest. To find other Tellabration locations and for
more information on Tellabration worldwide go to
www.tellabration.org
Since we started
Tellabration at WWU in 1999 we have always included performances of young storytellers
from local schools and colleges. This year (2007) the performance
will mostly focus on student performers from Western's storytelling
program who will be celebrating recent publications in folklore, as
we seek to further the art of storytelling, passing on the gift of gab
to the next generation of storytellers. Proceeds from our Tellabration support
education in youth storytelling.

Youth Storyteller Auditions and Workshop
There will be no
youth audition for Tellabration 2007
Other performance opportunities and venues may come available for young
storytellers in upcoming months.
If you are a young person who would like to learn more about the
traditional art of storytelling or improve your current skills, the
following workshop may be of interest to you....
Youth Storytelling
Workshop
Six week performance workshop with storyteller/educator Rosemary
Scott Vohs.
In this active and hands-on workshop, students will learn how to become
animated and engaging performers while learning the traditional art of
storytelling. Students will learn how to choose great stories from
around the world, how to learn and practice effectively, and how to put
on a lively performance. There will be lots of opportunity for
participants to practice their stories and receive constructive coaching
as well as participate in theatre games and vocal/performance exercises.
Students of similar age will be grouped together for coaching.
Recommended for young people ages 9-16. Younger children accepted at the
instructor's discretion.
For more information and/or to sign up, contact Rosemary Scott Vohs at

National Youth
Storytelling Showcase
Some of the
Youth storytellers who have performed at Tellabration have also applied
and sent audition tapes to the
National Youth Storytelling Olympics. Several of our local
youth storytellers have been accepted and have traveled to perform in
the NYSO.
As of 2005 NYSO has been renamed the
National Youth Storytelling Showcase.
Details and timelines for submissions can be found on the
NYSS
Homepage.
Several youth storytellers who
told at Bellingham's Tellabration 2003 also performed at the National
Storytelling Conference held on the campus of Western
Washington University, July 7-11 2004.
Storytelling is an
excellent opportunity for young performers. Let us know if you
have a youngster with the gift of gab.
