LeAlan Jones and Lloyd Newman were thirteen and fourteen years old when producer David Isay invited them to participate in a Public Broadcast System documentary series, Chicago Matters. For seven days in March 1993, the boys interviewed family and friends and gave running commentary about their neighborhood and school in the ghetto. Jones and Newman, who have been close friends for several years, reveal despair and fortitude, human and wisdom in their observations. Life in their neighborhood is a "war zone," and these children hope they will survive to adulthood, but they have no unrealistic expectations" (Sattler, Kramer, Shabatay, & Bernstein, 2000). In the two radio programs below, Jones and Newman introduce their family and their world. Click here for Ghetto
