WILDLIFE

Watch this page for a list of birds and other wildlife identified by the volunteer group known as "The Bird Group." These volunteers have been faithfully going to the wetlands in the early morning, rain or shine, to observe the wildlife at Ship Harbor. Their observations are now being entered into a data base and will be included here in the future.

The "Photo Group" of dedicated photography experts has already taken hundreds of photographs of scenery, volunteers, vegetation and wildlife and is hard at work printing images for posters and other displays and digitizing them for other uses. Some of those photos will eventually be included at this Web site.

Ann Dursch reports on birding at SHIP

Hello Birders

April's paths were wet and/or muddy. The weather and birds were quite normal for the month.

Two Canada Geese are still hanging around on and off. These are probably the two that fly up and down Guemes channel, honking loudly. Mew Gulls were still seen all month, 100 on the 12th.

The Kuehns saw 50+ terns fly out over the water on the 27th.

Male Rufous Hummingbirds were seen by many. Violet-green and Tree Swallows returned. Marsh Wrens sang loudly. A Common Yellowthroat was seen in its usual general area, near the dry center. Song, White-crowned and Golden-crowned Sparrows were joined by Savannahs.

Cowbirds were reported and a few Starlings.

A River Otter was seen on the open pond on the 26th and one actively fishing near the ferry pilings on the 27th. Hmm.

This thanks to Cleo --- sibleyart.com has updates on the Sibley book and interesting material re his approach to writing it. It leads you to a site from which you can copy a quick index for his book.

Pay parking resumes May 19. Charlies (restaurant) has again given permission for us to park on the south side of the restaurant, Mon. through Fri, until 9:00. Place a SHIP flyer on your dashboard.

I will be off a bit on the 27th, but hope to file a report on any material I have by the 25th.

Happy May birding.

Ann
