Research Vessels

The SPMC fleet includes three research vessels.  A new flagship vessel, the RV Zoea, has a 32’ aluminum hull with a beam of 9.5’.  The superstructure includes a cabin of 11’ in length, with provision for both passenger seating and small volume wet laboratory work.  The vessel is powered by a 310 HP turbo diesel with dual prop stern drive.  The stern is outfitted with a 3’ extended fantail platform, A-frame and hydraulic winch capable of lifting 1500 lb. The RV FAUNA is a 26’ aluminum hull with 175 hp outboard motor equipped with a pilot house and hand crank winch. The RV FLORA (19’) is powered by a 125 hp outboard and is equipped with a diving platform. All vessels provide access to shallow-water study sites, support  SCUBA activities and, with cruising speeds of 25 knots, permit access to remote sites for collection and study.    Other outboard powered boats include two 17' and one 19' hull, plus several smaller row boats.  Motor power ranges from 35 to 90 hp.  A variety of field sampling gear (trawls, grabs, nets, dredges) is available, as is a Hydrolab system for water quality measurements, underwater video system, and a small ROV.
