Electric Potential Simulations

Potential of Two Point Charge Simulation
A positive and negative point charge are at fixed locations on the x-axis. A third negative charge can be dragged around the xy-plane to see the value of the potential at its location. There is an local inverted, potential well at x = -.50365m and y = 0 for initial charge values of the two fixed charges. When the third negative charge is placed near this local potential maximum the third charge will go into a bound orbit about the fixed charge. Potential of Two Point Charges Problem

Orbiting the Two Point Charges QT Movie (1.4 M)
A third negative charge is released from rest off the x-axis and goes into orbit about the two fixed charges.
Oscillating on the negative x-axis QT Movie (488K)
A third negative charge is released from rest on the negative x-axis. The charge oscillates back and fourth on the x-axis.

Potential of an Infinitely Long, Line-Charge Simulation
An infinitely long, line-charge with a uniform charge density is placed along the z-axis. The simulation looks down the xy-plane perpendicular to the line-charge. A charged particle in the xy-plane can be positioned anywhere near the line charge and given an initial velocity in the xy-plane. Shown is electric potential at the location of the particle. The particle can be observed to orbit the line-charge in a very interesting orbit.
