Setup: A balloon is filled with water and hung vertically. The balloon is then pierced to see what will happen when the balloon erupts.
Observations:
- The force of gravity acts on each individual particle of water in the balloon. This is the main reason why the falling water retains its original shape as it falls.
- The balloon exerts a pressure on the water that produces a force equal to the weight of the water. However, this pressure only acts on the water in contact with the surface of the balloon.
- When the balloon is pierced only the water near the surface is affected. It would take a large force to disrupt the inertia of all the water.
