Pressure and Fluids QuickTime Movies

Air Pressure holding up a column of water Demonstration ( 1 M)
The pressure of normal atmospheric air can hold up a column of water 10.3 tall. To demonstrate this a cheesecloth placed over the end of a tube closed at the other end. The tube is then filled with water by pouring its through the cheesecloth until the tube is completely full of water. The tube is inverted and the water does fall out.

Archimedes Principle Demonstration (1.1M)
A cylinder is suspended from a cylindrical cup with the same volume. The cup and cylinder are hung from a weight scale . The cylinder is then submerged in water. When water is added to the cup, the weight scale should read the same as the original weight according to Archimedes Principle.

Diet Coke Floats and Classic Coke sinks QT Movie (424K)
A can of diet coke and regular classic coke are placed in an aquarium to see which one floats.

Hydrostatic Paradox Demonstration (468K)
The surface of water open to the air seeks the same level provied the water is not seperated. Alcohol is poured into the end tube that is connected to five different shaped tubes. The tubes are connected at their botttom where the hydro static pressure must be the same

Siphon Demonstration (1.1M)
A long tube is filled with red-colored water. One end of the tube is held out side the tank, level with the water in the tank. While the other end remains under water, the middle of the tube is lifted to the ceiling. Then the end of the tube is lowered to create a siphon.

Floating at the Interface between two liquids Demonstration (1.1 M)
A sealed tube which sinks in alcohol and floats in water is first floated in water. Alcohol (which floats on water) is added to the top of the water. The sealed tube float at the interface.

Weights Overboard in Aquarium Demonstration (1.1M)
Two weights are floated in a box-shape boat in an aquarium. The weights are then placed overboard to see what happen to the height of the water in the aquarium.

Weights Underboard in Aquarium Demonstration (952K)
Two weights are floated in a box-shape boat in an aquarium. The weights are the hung from the bottom of the boat to see what happens to the level the boat will float and height of the water in the aquarium.

Ice Overboard Demonstration (680K)
A block of ice is floated in a box-shape boat in an aquarium. The ice is placed overboard and allowed to melt to see hat happens to the level of the water.

Water Balloon Rupture under the pull of Gravity (900K)
A balloon is filled with water and hung vertically from its tied end. The balloon is then pierced to see what will happen when the balloon erupts.

Centripetal Force a Glass of Water Moving in a Vertical Circle Demo (430K)
A glass is partially filled with red colored water. The glass is then swung in a vertical circle. When the glass reaches the top of its arc will the water fall out?

Surface of Liquid under Rotation (700K)
A tank is partially filled with a liquid and then spun up to a constant rate of rotation to observe the shape of the liquid's surface. In the second part a small wooden ball is place on surface of the water to see if it will roll down the surface.
