Setup: A hammer is tossed into the air in such away that it has both rotational and translational motion.
Observations:
- This is an example of free rotational motion.
- The center of mass (CM) travels in a parabolic equivalent to that described in projectile motion.
The hammer rotates about its center of mass at constant angular velocity.
- The Slipping Bowling Ball problem (and IP imulation) is an example were there is both a force acting on the center of mass and a torque acting on the ball's rotation which are independent of each other until the ball stops slipping.
