Final Exam Study Guide
Fall Quarter 2000
You must complete four sections of the five
part final exam. Each section will be worth 25 points, and you may
earn partial credit in each section.
The exam will be given from 1:00-3:00 on Thursday, December 14, in
our regular classroom. Please bring blue books to class, and write
your exam in blue or black ink.
Part I: Multiple Choice (25 points)
In this portion of the exam you will be required to match a phrase to the character or term that is best associated with it. For example, you might match "banishment" with the descriptive phrase "a commonly used political punishment in Shakespearean plays." Most, but not all, of these matching items will come from the terms listed in the table below.
Part II: Character Identification (25 Points)
This portion of the exam is based on two of the quizzes you took during the term. You will be asked to match characters to phrases or quotes they would or could have uttered. This portion of the exam is not based on recalling lines of dialogue, but rather on knowing the personalities and quirks of major characters.
Part III. Passage Identification (25 points)
You must identify the speaker, play, situation, and significance of
three passages from three different plays we've read this term. You
may earn partial credit for your answers. This portion of the exam uses
the same format as its equivalent section on the mid-term exam.
Part IV. Short Answer Identification (25 Points)
Like Part I, this portion of the exam will come primarily from the items
listed in the table below. You will be required to write brief, concise
paragraphs identifying, describing, and/or defining two of the characters
and concepts below.
| ceremony | irony | the Great Chain of Being |
| appearance versus reality | equivocation | courtly love |
| prophecy in RII & Macbeth | clowns & fools in AYLI & Much Ado | use of disguises |
| the use humiliation or shaming | "unruly" women | apparitions |
| class in Much Ado & AYLI | gender roles in AYLI and Macbeth | honor in RII & Much Ado |
| the unnatural & the supernatural in Macbeth | fate & free will in Macbeth | eavesdropping |
| notions of "manliness" | Duncan & Macbeth | Claudio & Benedick |
| Mistress Quickly as a go-between | time in Shakespeare's plays | animal imagery |
Part V. Essay (25 points)
Write a 2-3 page essay on one of the topics listed below. Jody and I will select one of the topics for the final exam.
1. How do the uses of disguise differ in Shakearean comedy and
tragedy?
2. What are the differences between clowns and fools in two of
the plays we've read?
3. Explain how imagery functions in two of the plays we've
read.
