Description: English 100 is a writing course that offers practice in reading and writing about complex
texts, writing with fluency, and using the conventions of standard written English. Students will meet
three times during the course for individual conferences to discuss their current writing. Graded S
(satisfactory) and U (unsatisfactory).


Text: Judith Standford, Connections: Reading & Writing in Cultural Contexts, 3rd edition Mayfield, 2001.

Audio Tape:  Buy a 60 minute regular size audio cassette tape.  Occasionally, I will record my comments
on your papers.

Attendance Policy: If you miss more than four classes for any reason (including illness), you will not
pass the course.  If your work schedule conflicts with class time, please withdraw from the course
and re-enroll in it when you have more time to devote to the course.  If you are ill near the end of the term,
you should request an Incomplete.


Final Exam: Please arrange your Winter Break travel plans around our final exam, which is on
Monday, December 9 from 1:00-3:00 p.m.


Work Load: To earn credit for English 100, you must successfully complete each of the following assignments:
         ·        10-12 page final portfolio
         ·        submit multiple drafts of three focused writings ( a minimum length of 3 pages each)
         ·        write 2 reading/writing journal entries weekly (1 typed page minimum per entry)
         ·        weekly reading and writing exercises based on our writing
         ·        3 individual or group conferences with me
         ·        pass a final exam based on the course readings


Writing Center: Free tutoring is available at the University Writing Center in Wilson Library  389.
You may drop by on your own, or I will be happy to walk over with you and introduce you to a tutor.
Writing Center hours are normally 9:00-4:00 M-H; 10:00-2:00 on Fridays; and Sunday, T&W evenings
from 8:00-10:00 p.m.
