About Us
Sisters of Color International (SOCI) brings together feminist women of color in celebration of themselves and commitment to social justice. SOCI was founded in Chicago in 1991 after a walk out the previous year by the Women of Color Caucus of the national Women Studies Association. Since then, we have had several national and regional meetings. Now, in 2000, we launch the journal SOCI On-Line to respond to the possibilities of using the Internet to connect with women of color globally. We are aware that, unlike more traditional organizations, an onl-line space exposes women of color to the hostilities from the patriarchal, white-supremacist, consumerist elements that dominate cyberspace. However, we will not be escluded or dominated. We are creating an alternative woman of color space that challenges the negative, stereotypical portrayals of women on the Net. Invoking the enduring and inextinguishable spirits of women of color, we claim a space for ourselves. Here we commit ourselves to:
SOCI On-Line is in its formative stages, and we invite participation from all women of color in shaping the nature and function of this journal to suit our needs. We envision an interactive journal where women of color can share ideas, expressions, and information. Please bookmark our on-line journal and forward the address to other women of color. |
