Because Rugby is one of the most popular international sports in the world and has been steadily gaining popularity in the U.S. Although it is becoming more and more common, Rugby players are a special and rare breed of athlete who enjoy a fast-paced, challenging, and fun team sport. Rugby provides the athlete with both physical and mental challenges. Rugby also helps athletes improve their fitness and overall health.
Besides all of those reasons....RUGBY IS FUN!
The main goal of the Western Flames is to have fun. We don’t make cuts, and it’s not all about winning either. Sure winning is fun...and we do it often! But we also know how to have fun off of the pitch (a.k.a. the Rugby field).Every year we travel around the northwest to Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and throughout Washington to compete against other Universities. In addition to our league games we take special trips to other destinations which have included San Francisco, Santa Barbara, and Boston/Providence.
So get in shape, have fun, impress your friends, take the challenge - JOIN RUGBY!
Frequently Asked Questions:
"I'm too small to play rugby, don't you think I'd get killed?"
Some people think that they have to be big and burley to play rugby...but they are wrong!
Rugby players come in all shapes and sizes! There will always be a position on the field that you can play.
"I've never played before! Is that a problem?"
-NO! Definitely not. Experience helps, but 99% of our new players have never touched a rugby ball before. That's what practice is for!
"Do I have to try out...do you make cuts?"
We are a club sport...not Varsity! That means that you don't have to try out and we don't cut! Everyone gets to play if they show up to practice and pay their dues.
"What is the time commitment like?"
We practice 3 days a week for about 2 hours and we have games on some Saturdays. We know that school is the first commitment for students so it's okay if sometimes you have to miss practice or games because of school related stuff. Lots of our girls go to school, work, and still are able to play.
"So...how do I sign up?"
