Background

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is about being a community that takes up the fight against cancer. It's about creating awareness of cancer in the community and raising money to support the programs of the American Cancer Society. These programs include...

  • Cancer Research: The Northwest Division currently has $12.4 million dollars invested at 9 institutions.
  • Education: Materials and educational programs on early detection and prevention of cancer.
  • Advocacy: Asking legislators to support cancer-related initiatives.
  • Service: Numerous support services and programs for cancer patients and their families.
The Relay is so much more than a fundraiser. It allows us to honor cancer survivors, remember those who we have lost, and educate the community on early detection and prevention of cancer. The Relay For Life is always an overnight event to symbolize the fact that cancer never sleeps. There are many similarities between Relay and what a cancer patient goes through. Cancer patients cannot give up their fight against cancer, no matter what time of day or how terrible they feel. For us, it may get hot during the day and you may feel like quitting, but you keep walking. It may get windy and rainy during the night, but you press on, knowing that tomorrow will be a new day.

how it works

A team captain forms a team of 8-12 of his or her friends, co-workers, family members, etc. The team captain and team members go out and hold fundraisers to collect contributions prior to the event. We have Team Captain Meetings every month from January until the event in May. These meetings are designed to help teams come up with new ways to fundraise, answer questions, and help solve any problems that teams may be having. If the team captain cannot attend a meeting, just send a team member as a replacement. Important updates are given and your team doesn't want to miss the news. The Relay is the celebration that happens after the fundraising ends. Before the Relay begins, your team members will sign up for shifts to take turns walking or running around the track. VERY IMPORTANT RULE: There must be at least one team member on the track walking at all times during the Relay. It's the captain's job to make sure at least one team member is on the track at all times. Yes, that means someone has to be walking at 4am!! All funds that you raise as a team will be turned in at the beginning of the event and will be tallied to see which team raised the most money. There will be team and individual prizes for those who were able to raise the most!

Our Relay

The theme of the Second Annual Relay For Life of WWU is "Light The Night".  Across the world, millions of research labs are lit throughout the night as scientists work to find new treatments and ultimately the cure for cancer.  We want our Relay to light the night in honor and in appreciation of all the doctors and scientists who dedicate their lives to eradicating cancer from this world.  Help us light the night by creating spirit sticks and tent sites that light up in the night sky.  We will have prizes for the team who is the most spirited and who lights up the sky the brightest.

The relay will be held on the Western Washington University track, just outside the Wade King Rec Center. The Relay begins with the Survivors Lap and Opening Ceremony. Cancer Survivors are invited to come to the Relay and take the opening lap together. It is very hopeful and emotional to see all of the people that have survived cancer there with their caregivers, family, and friends. This will be one of the most powerful moments of the Relay. The opening ceremony begins at noon on May 21, 2005, but teams can come as early as 9:30am to set up their campsite on the football field. Literally...you set up tents!! These tents will be the central meeting point for your team throughout the event. At 10pm on May 21, a Luminaria Ceremony will be held to remember those we have lost to cancer and honor those that have survived. After the Luminaria Ceremony, various activities will take place throughout the night as participants continue to walk around the track. Our 18-hr event will end with a closing ceremony at 7:30am on May 22, 2005.

Activites

The track and surrounding areas will be packed with entertainment, food, and activities! These include live bands, massage, midnight aerobics, late night pizza, and much more! We will also be having contests for the best themes at the event, so make sure your team coordinates and comes up with a theme if you want a chance to win prizes! Teams are encouraged to decorate their campsites to go along with their theme because we will be having a contest for the best decorated campsite too!
